PRIDE Crosswalk Vandalized

On June 28th 2025 the Saugeen Shores Police Service commenced an investigation into a hate motivated crime in Port Elgin.
 
The PRIDE rainbow crosswalk, located on Gustavus St adjacent to Saugeen District Senior School, was damaged. A Driver had intentionally spun the tires of their vehicle causing damage to the crosswalk by leaving “burn-out” marks.
 
Police advise that Hate Crime and Hate Motivated Crime have a harmful impact on the community. It causes emotional trauma to the identified groups that are victimized by hate crime, and it results in serious friction between different groups in our society.
 
The Saugeen Shores Police Service works closely with our community and the local Crown Attorney to ensure that we respond effectively when receiving complaints about activities that may constitute a hate motivated offence. These crimes will not be tolerated.
 
In 2020 a similar crime occurred on this crosswalk. Two people were identified, arrested and charged with Mischief Under $5000 and Drive Motor Vehicle Perform Stunt.
