Impaired Driving Fail to Remain Collision

On Saturday, September 7th at approximately 7:00 pm a pick-up truck was observed doing “burn-outs” and driving at a high rate of speed in the area of the Port Elgin beach. During this time there was heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area.

Witnesses observed the vehicle to continue at a fast rate on Harbour Street running off the road on Elgin Street striking a tree.  The male driver exited the heavily damaged vehicle, uninjured, and fled the scene of the collision.

Officers arrived on scene and received a description of the driver, who had fled into a wooded area near Market Street.  A responding officer located the man and placed him under arrest.

The man was observed to be in an intoxicated state.  He was transported to the police station for breath tests.

While at the station the man provided two samples, both reading more than twice the legal limit.

A 34 year old Port Elgin man has been charged with:

  1. Dangerous Operation of a Motor vehicle – Criminal Code
  2. Operation while impaired – Criminal Code
  3. Operation while impaired (blood alcohol concentration) – Criminal Code

  5. Fail to Comply with an Undertaking (alcohol prohibition) -  Criminal Code

  7. Operator Motor vehicle, no current validated permit – Highway Traffic Act

He was released with a court appearance.
